Your Dentist Suggests New Year’s Resolutions for a Healthier Mouth

new year goals2018 is just around the corner! With the new year sneaking up on us so quickly, have you had time to think about what you want to accomplish after you put your new calendar up on the wall? Perhaps you want to shed a few pounds, save more money for that European vacation you’ve always dreamed about, or learn to play a musical instrument. But does your oral health have a place on your list of New Year’s Resolutions? If not, it might be time to consider putting one (or more) of the following goals on there. Your mouth will be happier, and your dentist in Hamden will be proud of you for your efforts.

Floss Like a Boss

Ideally, you should floss at least once a day — how are you doing in that regard? If your flossing habits are a bit spotty, 2018 is the perfect time to turn things around. By using a little piece of string to clean between your teeth, you remove plaque and food particles that your toothbrush simply can’t reach.

To get into the cavity-preventing habit of flossing, place your container of floss someplace in your bathroom where it’s easy to see. This visual reminder may just nudge your conscience until you can’t not floss.

Visit the Dentist

Has it been a while since you’ve visited your dentist in Hamden? You should go at least twice a year. If that hasn’t been your custom lately, it’s time to get reacquainted with your dental care provider. Why not schedule an appointment for some time early in 2018? Hopefully, you’ll feel so awesome after you get your teeth cleaned that you’ll wonder why you ever neglected visits to your friendly local dentist.

Say No to the Sweet Stuff

The end of the year is packed full of food temptations, and most of those choices are loaded with sugar — fudge, eggnog, caramel popcorn, peppermint bark, and a bunch of other goodies might be calling your name. As delicious as such treats are, though, they can wreak havoc on your teeth.

When 2018 begins, so can your new low-sugar policy. This doesn’t mean you can never indulge in the sweet stuff, but you should always be aware of how much of it you’re consuming and set limits for yourself. You should also brush your teeth about an hour after you enjoy your favorite candy, cake, or ice cream.

Put the Nix on Nicotine

Cigarettes and chewing tobacco are terrible for your oral health. They can stain your teeth, give you bad breath, and drastically increase the chance that you’ll develop oral cancer. The sooner you quit, the better. Perhaps you can do some research on quitting methods as 2017 ends so that in 2018, you’re ready to finally take control of your habit.

We want your smile to have an awesome 2018! Use the above suggestions to achieve a healthier mouth in the new year.
