There is never an ideal time for smile-related injuries. However, accidentally cracking a tooth while biting into your first meal on vacation is quite possibly the worst timing imaginable. After all, summertime is meant for fun in the sun, not hours spent in your dentist’s treatment chair! To help prevent this from happening, keep reading for a few tips to prevent dental emergencies this summer.

#1. Schedule a Checkup with Your Dentist Before You Leave

Now that it is June, 2021 is officially halfway over. So, if you haven’t scheduled your first dental checkup and cleaning of the year, then now is the time to do so! However, even if you’ve already visited your dentist this year, it’s always a good idea to schedule a checkup before you leave. Doing so allows your dental team to confirm that there are no chipped, cracked, or otherwise damaged teeth that could lead to complications during your summer plans.

#2. Pack Your Oral Hygiene Essentials

Summertime is all about relaxation, but that doesn’t mean you should ease up on your oral hygiene routine. In fact, you should be as vigilant as ever! Whether you are going on a road trip, jet-setting abroad, or planning a staycation, make sure to double and triple-check that you packed your toothbrush, floss, and mouthwash.

#3. Stock Up on Healthy Snack Options

When the summer sun is beating down on you, it can be oh-so-tempting to reach for a refreshing glass of soda or some cool ice cream. However, sugary foods and beverages like these can wreak havoc on your smile. Instead, pack your bag with plenty of water and healthy snacks, like apples, hard-boiled eggs, cheese, and nuts.

#4. Practice Safety During Summer Sports

Pickup games of volleyball and ultimate frisbee at the park are a few staple summer activities. Don’t worry – you don’t have to give them up for the sake of your oral health. You should, however, be sure to wear a mouthguard when you do participate. After all, one of the quickest ways to end up with a knocked-out tooth is by leaving your mouth unprotected during sports. So, don’t forget your mouthguard this summer!

Whether you are planning a relaxing staycation or an exciting adventure abroad, you don’t want a dental injury to stand in your way. To prevent that from happening, make sure to practice good oral hygiene and schedule an appointment with your dentist sooner rather than later!
