When you’re in the middle of the Invisalign process, one of the most alarming things that can happen to you is suddenly realizing that you have lost an aligner. Needless to say, this is an issue that could easily disrupt your treatment if you don’t take the right steps to resolve it. That’s why it’s important to have a plan for dealing with the worst-case scenario – or stopping it from happening in the first place! Below is a look at what to do about a lost Invisalign aligner, as well as tips for avoiding such a situation.

What Should You Do If an Invisalign Aligner Goes Missing?

Your first step, obviously, should be to see if you can find the aligner. Take the time to retrace your steps closely and search anywhere you happened to be recently. Don’t leave any stone unturned; your aligner could have been thrown away by accident, or it might have fallen between the couch cushions. You’ll have the best chance of finding it if you’re as thorough as possible.

In the event that you simply can’t locate your aligner, call your dentist and ask what they recommend. Oftentimes, you can simply have a replacement made; until then, you can wear a previous aligner so that your teeth don’t drift back to their original positions and undo all your progress. Alternatively, you might be able to simply move on to the next aligner in the series.

What Can You Do to Avoid Losing an Aligner?

Obviously, there’s always a chance of accidents happening even if you take all the right precautions. Nevertheless, you’ll be less likely to lose your aligners if you practice the right habits:

  • Don’t Take Your Aligners Out Unnecessarily: You should only remove your aligners for meals and oral hygiene purposes. Otherwise, they should stay in your mouth at all times.
  • Do Not Place Them Carelessly: It can be all too easy to place your aligners on a table or wrap them in a napkin without thinking, but this can easily lead to them being left behind or thrown away.
  • Always Put Your Aligners in Their Case: Any time you’re not wearing your aligners, they should be in their protective case. This will allow you to keep track of them, and it will keep them safe until you’re ready to put them back in your mouth.

If you do ever end up losing your aligners, remain calm. The sooner you let your dentist know, the sooner they can help you correct the problem and get you back on track toward a straighter smile.
