Traditional metal braces are a tried and proven way to shift teeth into healthier positions, but they can be rather inconvenient for many people and are quite conspicuous when patients speak, laugh, or smile. Thankfully, Invisalign is a modern orthodontic treatment that realigns teeth using virtually invisible clear aligners. Here’s a quick look at how the treatment process works from your consultation to when you receive your retainer.
Step One: Consultation
The first step to receiving Invisalign is to schedule a consultation with your dentist. During this meeting, your oral healthcare provider will evaluate your oral health and medical history and discuss your needs and preferences for the treatment. Invisalign can be an excellent solution for most mild to moderate cases of dental misalignment, but braces may be the best way to resolve severe cases. If you are a suitable candidate for Invisalign, your dentist will measure your bite alignment to provide the data needed to construct your clear aligners.
Step Two: Aligners
Your dentist will provide you with a personalized sequence of clear aligners designed to fit snugly over your teeth so they can exert the consistent pressure necessary to shift them into healthier positions. You’ll need to wear each pair of aligners for at least twenty hours daily for about two weeks before switching to the next pair in your sequence. The new set of aligners will pick the treatment up where the last set left off, and this process will continue until your teeth are properly realigned. You’ll have to adhere to a set of maintenance and hygiene requirements while wearing your aligners, and your dentist will make sure you know exactly how to keep your treatment on track.
Step Three: Retainer
After your orthodontic treatment is complete, your dentist will provide you with a retainer designed to prevent your teeth from shifting back towards their previous positions. While some patients may need to wear their retainers for most of the day immediately after their treatments, you will eventually only have to wear your appliance when asleep. It’s crucial to wear your retainer as instructed for several years after your treatment and ideal to continue wearing it for life to prevent new misalignments.
Invisalign may be the best way for you to achieve a gorgeous and healthy smile. Consulting with your dentist can help you understand how to get your teeth in great shape.
